In Alberta’s liquids-rich plays, producers drill primarily for high-value natural gas liquids (pentanes, propane, butane), the dry gas that comes with those wells is thus effectively a by-product, so supply stays strong even when prices are low. With persistent export constraints (limited pipelines and LNG capacity), Alberta’s gas benchmark (AECO) often trades at a discount to NYMEX—creating a structurally low-cost fuel environment for on-site generation.
